While keeping the basis of the game intact, it does feel a little barren in terms of creativity as nothing ever really happens. Each level offers something fun and new to try and maneuver around and its fast-paced style of gameplay will always keep you running and guessing what’s around the next corner. Going through Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will take roughly up to five hours, which is what you’d expect from a platformer of its style. The soundtrack also becomes far too repetitive as it is mainly a loop of the same few electronic beats from mission to mission as well as feeling like it was ripped out of the first game. It’s bright and colorful stages, mixed with the immense flashing lights truly brings out the best of this action-platformer, even if it does feel a tad bit recycled. The Mega Man X inspired art style returns and never looked better.
With a new crew of villains at the helm, trying to create a “paradise” (Obviously conducted in an evil manner towards civilians) for all adepts to flourish in, it is up to Gunvolt and Coppen to reluctantly work together to save the world once more. While funny at times, it did felt far too eccentric for my taste and brought down the true plot of the game which is far more serious. It really takes its inspirations with popular animes and the idea of love triangles to thicken its subplots.
The story in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is… odd. Seeing the story unfold this way gives a clearer view as to what is going on behind the scenes as well as elevating the goals for the two main characters. One is an outlaw who is trying to make end’s meat and protect those near him, while the other is hunting down adepts as he has no compassion for their existence. The campaign is split into two and offers both points of view of the protagonists and does add a certain depth to the situation surrounding both characters. It does add more to play with in terms of gameplay and helps balance the unique style of both rogues. Coppen offers a much more straightforward style of gameplay as he will rely upon taking down foes with a dash attacks after firing on them. The biggest difference with Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is that you not only get to play as Gunvolt but also as his rival in Coppen, who is seen more like an anti-hero (even more than Gunvolt) and truly hates those with adept capabilities. As Gunvolt, you will be able to control the powers of lightning and use it to battle your way through each stage by utilizing it for both offense and defense capabilities and it all feels good to use. The short answer to that question is no, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 does not present a completely different experience and stays far too close to its origins, but that’s ok, what it does offer is still the great gameplay from its predecessor and tight combat mechanics to go along with it. The big question is – does the sequel can bring enough to the table to differentiate itself from its predecessor to deliver another electrifying experience or will it simply just fizzle out of ideas?
